EVEA Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary!

In 2019, EVEA, the Estonian Association of SMEs and a member of European Entrepreneurs CEA-PME, celebrates its 30 th birthday. The association was founded in 1989, while the country was still under Soviet rule, far from being independent. It was an important year of changes and reforms, including the possibility to create and manage independently-owned small and medium sized businesses in the country.

EVEA was created to defend and champion SMEs since the very moment it was possible for them to exist in Estonia. Its main task, which EVEA undertakes now since three decades, is watch-dogging the legislation and improving the entrepreneurial environment for SMEs, as they became the backbone of the Estonian economy: 99.8% of Estonian companies are SMEs, which provide 80% of Estonian private sector employment and 84% of private investments.

Even today the association’s work is essential, says Vice-President Marina Kaas, one of the founders of EVEA back in 1988, for example by helping companies fend off unnecessary burden, like the new national regulation that forces entrepreneurs to ensure Radon pollution is under control, a task that should be responsibility of building companies, real-estate owners and the public authorities themselves, but not – as always – be put on companies’ backs.

Under the presidency of Heiki Rits, elected in 2018, the association is now celebrating its thirty years’ anniversary, with a gala-conference "Estonian Entrepreneurship -30: From Candyfloss to Smart Specialization" on 16 January 2019 in Tallinn.

The members of the Estonian Government as well as the heads of organizations of European SMEs will attend the event and best performing companies will be awarded for their entrepreneurial spirit. As Estonia’s parliamentary elections are approaching, candidates for the position of Prime Minister will have their first debate on SMEs policy issues.

We look forward to many more years of working together with EVEA to make sure SMEs are recognised and supported as the important economic and social driving forces they are! Happy Anniversary, EVEA!
